Nomads bag fist victory in South East Asia tournament

Game: Nomads v Jakarta Komodos @ Nomads, Saturday 4^th Feb 2012

In the first ever match of the South East Asian Club Championship last Saturday, Manila Nomads required a gargantuan team effort to overcome a well-drilled and tenacious visiting Jakarta Komodos.

This much- anticipated game proved to be a classic encounter, with a home side keen to put last weekend's thumping in the local Tens League behind them and a visiting team determined not to allow depleted travelling numbers to affect their game-plan.

Within the Nomads ranks, the early season opportunity to play 15's was universally welcomed. The vast majority of the club's players have been brought up on this version of the game and with massive competition for first team places this year, it was no surprise that throughout the entire squad, there was a real buzz and their enthusiasm was plain to see.

The Komodos had only travelled with seventeen players and the empty seats on the bench were taken up by some members of the Manila Hapons. In charge of the game was Harry Wang, newly appointed member of the Asian Referees Panel; as the game progressed, it became clear that he was an official of a standard the visitors were not used to.

The opening 15 minutes both teams set out their stalls and there was no doubt even at this early stage in proceedings that this was not going to be a runaway victory for either side. On 14 minutes a well worked back-line move saw local hero Danny Williams put over by a perfectly timed pass from Philippine international Sevens player and captain Jon Morales. Williams, who had played 90 minutes of football in the National Premiership only two hours before kick-off, calmly slotted the conversion for a 7-0 lead. Unfortunately a freak accident as the last pass was completed, forced Morales from the field having sustained a broken and dislocated finger.

Whether it was their captain's departure, a lapse in the Nomad's concentration, or the steely determination of the visitors to get straight back into the game, the crowd did not have to wait long for the next score. Nomads failed to field the restart and then worse still, failed to clear their lines, instead choosing to throw out a speculative pass on their own 5 metre line. The result was a try to the Komodos, courtesy of the scavenging Martijn Decker.

A William's penalty midway through the half put Nomads 10-5 up, but it was the Komodos, despite being forced to live off scraps of possession, who led at the half-time whistle. A loose pass in midfield was well anticipated by the visiting captain Gareth Rae, who sprinted over from some 35 metres out and then bagged the extras for a narrow 12-10 lead.

Nomad's forwards, many of whom were at their peak not last decade, or even the previous one, but in the eighties, were magnificent all day. The early season fitness work is clearly paying dividends and they dominated proceedings in the loose and in the tight. This is not to say that in any way the Komodos were rolling over, far from it, and as the second half progressed, their refusal to lie down, brought respect and admiration from the local spectators.

A Komodo's penalty only minutes into the second period, widened the gap to five points, before Nomad's pocket dynamo Eric Savina, on his fortieth birthday, (and still by some distance only the third oldest starting forward) proved what an asset he is to the home team's ranks, crossing the line to level the scores. Savina, as oft times before seemed to defy the laws of physics throughout the game, managing to consistently get the upper hand of far bigger opponents. If his personal effort and determination could be bottled the club could make a fortune.

Fifteen a piece, with thirty minutes to play. This was exactly what the organisers of this five team regional tournament had hoped for and it was to take another eighteen minutes before Nomads could finally edge ahead and then round of the victory with a flourish. The visitors sustained several game-ending injuries, but still they soldiered on, with the replacements stepping up to the task valiantly.

Two Williams's penalties took his personal tally for the day to eighteen and then hard running, hard tackling full-back Sam Fogg, yet again stuck two fingers up to those who think he's just a pretty boy, by capping a solid performance with a try two minutes from the death.

The final outcome was a 28-15 win for Nomads, but there is no doubt that home advantage, certainly in terms of availability of players, will play a large part in determining results. Any team who can pick up points on the road will make a huge step towards being the first to be crowned club champions of South East Asia.

For Nomads this was a most satisfying win and one of the biggest bonuses for coach Phil Gittus , was that he was able to utilise his entire bench, with no real disruption to the pattern of play. In Barberis and Kesterton they have two safe pairs of hands in the line-out, the scrum is solid and throughout the forwards there is an ever-growing confidence, which will compliment their natural abrasiveness. Out wide Williams is a class act and it will not be too long before their youthful three-quarters really click and the team add a more expansive dimension to their game-plan.

Globe - PRFU 7s League 2011

The GLOBE - PRFU 7s League will kick-off on Saturday, July 30 at Rizal Stadium. Schedule will be sent next week.

Teams must nominate for the league this Friday 22 July. There will be 2 divisions:

Division 1 which will include current PRFU clubs and teams

Division 2 which will include new PRFU teams and Filipino clubs.

For future reference, the following are the dates other GLOBE - PRFU 7s Rounds will be played at the Rizal Stadium:

August 13, September 17, September 24 and October 1

The final round will be played at Nomad Sports Club.

PRFU 15s series about to commence

The ZEPHYR COMMUNICATIONS PRFU 15s LEAGUE will kick off starting this May 14. This League will be run on the following dates/venues:

Well done to Nomads and Carabaos teams for first up wins in the PRFU 10s last Saturday at Nomads.

Great club debuts to Damien, Saki, Nick T and Clutch.

Jon 'Madman' Morales had a cracking first game as Captain, including being denied an outstanding solo try when held up over the line, and overall the squad depth looked good. All bodes well for a strong 2011 for Nomads and the build up to the Manila 10s on March 19 & 20

PRFU 10s LEAGUE KICKS OFF FOR 2011

The first games of Rugby Union have been played for 2011 and it was the oldest club in the Philippines, Nomads Rugby Club that began in style with two comfortable wins over their cross town rivals the Alabang Eagles. This year the PRFU 10s league started in late January to allow all club teams at least two months to fully prepare for the Manila 10s which will be held at Nomads on March 19/20^th.

The season opened with the Nomads slowly taking the pitch after the Alabang Ibons had undertaken a 20 minute warm up, this may have done more good than harm and it was the Carabaos that started more aggressively to take a halftime lead of 14 – 5. Carabaos Captain Sean Georget led by example and scored the opening try for his team and then out of the blue, Steve "Scotty" Mitchell managed throw away the years and at 55 scored a double when he threw a dummy to know one and everyone fell for it, including the referee and then stormed like a raging bull from the back of an attacking lineout to force a dropped ball behind and the Ibons tryline and dive on the loose ball to score his second try in the season's opening game. Steve has obviously laid early claims to Nomads players of the year by scoring a double at 55 years of age in the first game of season. On the back of" Steve the Scotsmans" attacking raids the Carabaos ran out easy winners by 45 – 5.

The second game of the day saw a rejuvenated Manila Hapons show up to Nomads with more than the usual 10 players and the new players also proved that they can play quality rugby by defeating the Philippine Development Team by 29 – 19. The Hapons have obviously spent the off season recruiting new Japanese players to their team and up to 18 players were ready to play in the first game of the season, this bodes well for the Hapons and they definitely looked like they mean business in 2011, with all their new recruits having an impact on the game. The Development team were depleted with a majority of the National Development team playing for the Eagles in the last game of the round. Take nothing away from a new Hapons team; they will be a new force to reckon with in 2011.

The last game of the round had the Alabang Eagles v Nomads in a replay of last year's A division final. National Team Players David Carman and John Morales went head to head and led their teams into the first game of the season, unfortunately for both players they would have to leave the field during the game with David sidelined in the first half after scoring the Eagles solo try and John coming of the field late in the Second half after having a try disallowed. Overall it was a dominant display by the Nomads with Sam Fogg scoring a hat trick of tries to lead the Nomads to a convincing 45 to 22 win. The Nomads forwards outplayed the Eagles and once again penalties would be the Eagles downfall with two of Nomads first half tries coming on the back of high tackle penalties.

Nomads win Fat Boy 10s title 2010

Nomads have taken out the Fat Boy 10s title again for the 4th time, winning the 2010 tournament in style by thoroughly outplaying the hosts the Pot Bellied Pigs in the final, and going the whole day without conceding a single point against them. Outstanding performance, and great tournament rugby - the team got better with each game as the combinations started to come together, and the individual performances were excellent. Well done to Nigel Lawson named player of the day, but hard to pick one from such a good all-round team performance.

And a good day out for the Carabaos, though with less stellar results on the scoreboard. A draw first up against Alabang Eagles was a good result, and set the tone for a great defensive effort all day. One loss to Causeway Bay relegated Carabaos to lower tiers and a hotly contested semi-final against the US navy boys from the George Washington ended 7-7. Despite his clear weight advantage over his opponent Alex was ruled too thin for a run off, and in the re-run Jimbo couldn't quite hold off the much younger and lighter american. Carabaos played some good rugby in patches, but in the end some basic mistakes held them back from a few more wins. Next year....

A good day of rugby, a great 5 match run from Nomads, another trophy for the cabinet, and no one in jail (well not for too long anyways). Well done to all.

Nomads PRFU 15's Champions 2010

Brilliant effort by all the boys last Saturday and indeed over all 3 games. Just a quick wrap up of the season and what's up next:

The first game was a bit of a non contest with the Nomads dominating over an unusually subdued Eagles team. Some huge performances all over the park with Ingram, Nigel, Retzlaff, James Garraway and BPitts having outstanding games and the team keeping a clean sheet to boot. Final score 52-0.

The second game was a different story with the Eagles seemingly picking up their game and the Nomads not turning up at all. The final game of club legend Hamish Reid really did deserve a better performance but it wasn't to be. After a closely fought battle, some loose kicking and a record number of errors committed by the Nomads, the game finished 21-20 Eagles. Notable mention to Pierre and Madman Morales who made some great hit-ups and both had outstanding games with Madman cracking a few ribs in the process – nothing to do with the hospital balls he was getting.

The decider. Last Saturday was perfectly poised for a massive encounter. The last game against the Eagles and Romano's party re-galvanized the lads and ensured that we would not get turned over on home turf again. After a quiet start, Nomads began to slowly turn the screw and racked up some good scores. Some big tries from Savina, Chittick, BPitts, Manuel and Arnaud, ensured that we were always in control but some breakaway tries and Bareback's unfortunate sinbin made the game interesting. Thankfully it was my goal-kicking that kept us in-front, plus my masterful direction of the play around the pitch. Oh, and my mid-field tackling on their backrow. Overall though a good display of rugby and some great effort from the likes of Ryan, Gittus and Chicken to make a massive effort and ensure they were there on the day. Final score 43-19.

No practice this Wednesday, but there will be practice this coming Saturday at Nomads. An email will be sent later this week to confirm time.

Overall a great 15's season. Big thanks to all the lads who made the effort to be there for each game, to Chittick for taking care of game day duties and prep for both teams and to Romano for putting on an epic mid-season party.

Nomads take PRFU 15s title!

Congrats to everyone for a great win on Saturday, running out victors 42 - 19 over the Alabang Ealges. A solid all round team performance to bounce back from the one-point defeat the previous week, and improved performance all round the pitch.

Returning number 8 Romain B had a stellar game, as did new recruit Manu from Argentina, open-side flanker Eric Savina, inside-centre Bobby Pitts, and prop Pierre Fallourd. The Eagles new, improved back-row of Evans, Malaki and Dave Carmen challenged the Nomads pack for the whole match, but the collective experience of the Nomads boys won out in the end. Danny Williams led well in his first 15s game as skipper, and kicked all but one of his conversions to help push the score along. Tries to Eric Savina, Sam C, Paul R, Manu, Arnaud Cauchois, Sean Georget (plus a couple of others) set up a great win and the national 15s title.

Nomads Players of the Year 2009

Congratulations to our Players of the Year for 2009, the two war-horses, Eric Savina and Paul Ingram.

Both players had stellar years, belied their age, and showed a lot of youngsters how to put in on the pitch. In the big matches throughout the year the two of them showed their experience and class (though not in the 7s for some reason...).

Savina was excellent in every match he played, regularly coming off the pitch as one of the best two or three players, and managed to be consistent throughout the year despite a distinctly gallic lack of interest in training (to be fair to him the new job meant he couldn't make many Wed night sessions). As usual Eric played way above his weight at hooker, way above his weight at second row, and just about held his own in touch :-) There is nothing but 100% commitment from Savina every moment he is on the pitch.

Ingram also had a great year, being a particularly steady influence in the scrum through a time when we chopped and changed the other front row members pretty much every game. Paul was in such good form that the national selectors couldn't ignore his form and technique and so 'Pops' made his international debut at the young age of 44. He was a great help for the rest of the national pack, basically working as an additional forwards coach, and then did exactly that with the U20s national side to help the young front-rowers hold their own against bigger packs.

Well done to Paul and Eric - our Nomads Players Of The Year for 2009!

Steve Mommaerts played almost every game this year, only missing one midweek game. Consider that commitment in scheduling, priorities, fitness...

And not only did 'Blondie' put in on the pitch, he pushed hard at training, regularly organised sessions and never let anyone forget just why Americans invented email. Momo was also a solid performer in the centres, harvesting a good number of tries across 10s, 15s and 7s games and even had a couple of stints in the second row... word on the street is that if he made the switch to the forwards he may well take the big prize in 2010!

Best New Player 2009

Aaron Briddon beat out a stellar line-up of new talent for Nomads this year in taking the Best New Player 2009 trophy. Basile Ricard, Alex Patrick, Tim Gray all had rightful claims to the trophy but it was Briddon covering both Carabaos and Nomads, playing with gusto, getting better throughout the year in his new scrum-half position, and his stellar defensive effort in every game that gave him the trophy. Definitely a good start to a long Nomads career.

National debuts for Nomads stars

Congratulations to John Munro, Paul Ingram, and Hamish Reid, three members of the Nomads gang who made their international debuts yesterday in the Philippines Volcanoes 15 - 0 win over Iran. Munro played a great game, stepping up to battle the much bigger Iran pack and executing some classic tackles around the ankles, Ingram was the key player in steadying a Volcanoes scrum that had looked a little shakey early in the game, and Reid managed to squeeze in a few hits and line out grabs in his efforts late in the game.

Well done to all the Volcanoes squad led by Mike Letts for the win. The boys will step it up another notch on saturday at 3pm in the IRB Asian 5 Nations Division 3 championship game. Be there to support the team.

The Bulletes will be there with their new rallying cry for the crowd so get on board:

PRFU National Mens Team Trials

National Team Trials on today, Saturday 20th June at Nomads Sports Club from 4pm. All welcome.

These selection games will provide the team for the Philippine Volcanoes National Mens team plays against Iran on Wednesday 1st July, while Guam and Indonesia do battle the same day.

On Saturday 4th July the winners of those two games will play off for the Asian Rugby Football Union Division 3 title, and the right to be promoted next year to Div 2. The two losing teams will match up for 3rd and 4th.

Get into it, support the national team, a bunch of Pinoy champs!

Nomads win PRFU 15s series for 2009

Great win by Nomads at Ultra Sports Complex in the wet last week - completely dominated the Alabang Eagles for a 42-17 win. The forwards created the win, driving all over the top of their opposition throughout the whole game, led by a lot of experienced players who revelled in the wet, muddy conditions. Man of the match was second-rower Hamish Reid who didn't stop working all day, ably supported by those try hogs Savina, Hoadley, Barberis, Retzlaff, Kaplan - all of the pack played brilliantly in executing the simple game well.

The Carabaos also had a 10s game vs Alabang Ibons, a game that came down to the final plays of the game to decide the winner - Ibons just pulling ahead through a few more fresh legs and some smart play by Andrea Engelbrecht. Nomads player of the game was Paolo Ocampo, a determined, non-stop contribution right across the pitch hitting it up and playing solid wet weather rugby.

Tim Gray, the new find at inside centre, was judged PRFU Man of the Series for the whole 15s league.

Well done Nomads!

Nomads Take Cebu 10s Title

An outstanding day on Saturday, with Nomads taking out the Plate and Carabaos taking out the Bowl at the Fat Boy 10s up at Clark. And an outstanding performance from the Pot Bellied Pigs and their brethren in raising a bucketload of money for the very deserving kids at the Bahay Bata orphanage, and also funds for the PRFU. Great result all round. Of course we should have won the overall Cup, but you can’t do much more than go through undefeated! Next year…

Big congratulations to all Nomads, Carabaos, and supporters. What a great weekend all round – a real pleasure to be involved in, and some lasting memories for all. Everyone put in throughout the weekend and there were some great team performances. Nomads taking Div 2 final and Carabaos getting to Div 3 semi-finals was a superb club performance, and everyone involved should be proud of the part they played. As we all know it doesn’t happen often, so great for all of us to be involved in this one.

For the record - Nomads beat Macau, Para Todu from Guam, and Taipei Giants on Sunday to take the Plate trophy, and Carabaos were knocked out in the semis by a team that dropped down from Div 2 and went on to take the Div 3 title. Great efforts.

There are a few bruised and battered bodies out there, so we’ll take two weeks off – nothing on this week or next.

Great to play with you all, for me that’s what rugby is all about. Brilliant.

Eagles beat Nomads 34-29 in 10s league opener

Both sides started the encounter running a lot and producing a very watchable game of rugby. At the 1st break, Eagles and Nomads were tied with 2 tries each... and a very low tackle count! Better support and defense allowed a new-look Nomads side to end one try up at the 2nd break. With better fitness and their trademark never-let-go attitude, the Eagles managed to score twice in the last period and seal a well-deserved 34-29 first victory.

Good to see last year's Live Match fighters Paul and JJ go at it again, this time wearing the same colors. Chicken's knees are back in the tape and on the run, come on the Manok. Another strong performance by young Carl was to be noted, so was the dire need for a big collective fitness push in the next few weeks. Starts tonight (Monday) @ 8pm @ Polo Club, everyone's welcome to join for a nice evening sweat. A10s are March 15, M10s April 5, no time to loose...

Nomads Beat Eagles 24-7 in season opener

Good strong game, lots of new blood, good performances by young locals Carl and Eric and by new Kiwi Kevin. Hats off to Evans for putting up a Man Of The Match performance and scoring 3 tries. The old blood slowly getting back in shape. Broken finger alert for our new Cappie, hopefully nothing serious, let's get fit and do it again on Feb 9. In the meantime, fitness run Mondays @ 8 at the Polo Club, training @ Nomads Weds @ 7:30pm. Go Nomads!

Nomads vs. Eagles, the first of many this season...

The mighty Nomads take on the Eagles tonight @ 6:15pm in Merville. Both sides will want to make a statement in this first encounter of the season. Last season saw the Eagles dominate their nemesis rather consistently and Nomads have pledged to regain their 'Best in the Country' trademark early this year. Let's wish the boys all the best and see you at the club.
